Women Working

Behind the Curtain

Women Working........are beautiful. I was in Washington D.C.recently. It was hot. But what better place to be for a couple of sweltering days on vacation than the National Galleries of Art. I wandered the galleries without my usual focus, my body and mind were a bit weary after walking those long and beautiful streets to get to the galleries. Distances are farther than you think when it’s 95 degrees. So on arrival, my husband and I were content to saunter into the rooms closest to the doors. I was happily reintroduced to lesser known artists like Vuillard, Bonnard, and the brilliant Mary Cassatt. The National Gallery of Art suffers from an embrassment of riches when it comes to the big dogs like Van Gogh, Degas and Monet. I love them too, but our new found pleasure in sauntering had its rewards. The subject matter In these rooms was familiar and rich. Most of the paintings revolved around women working, dressing, tending to their children. One of my favorites by Vuillard titled Closing the Curtains, it’s a simple painting of a woman closing the curtains in her home. Another by Mary Cassatt was Woman with Sunflower. It wasn’t really about a sunflower, but the joy she was having introducing a young child that was seated on her lap, to a hand held mirror. It was lovely. I have often taken pictures of the women who work at BonBonerie. I think they are beautiful as they roll out scones, place a sheet tray of cakes into the oven, decorate a fancy party cake or listen attentively to a customer at the counter. I think they are all worthy of being painted. I have spent most of my adult life tending to BonBonerie. So much beauty has passed before me in the pastries and in the people who work here. Sometimes coming to work is like visiting a gallery, but unfortunately most of what we do here is best loved when it disappears. But that is a good thing too and forces us to come back day after day to create what we hope is always something ”Beautiful and Delicious” for you to enjoy.
