What am I thankful for this year?
What am I thankful for this year?
In the midst of the organized chaos of Bonbonerie, there is so much work to be done with so many details attended to. There are meetings where we have to choose what container a front table cake should be baked in, meetings about what shape the Christmas cookies will be and then what will the color scheme be this year. Should we change the design of the yule log? Should we replace the mini pastry with the raisin filling to something else because no one likes raisins anymore? That is going on months before Thanksgiving.
The planning for Thanksgiving is simpler. We know the classic pumpkin, apple and pecan pies made well are still the perfect choice along with our pumpkin roll and pumpkin cheesecake. We tweak some things with a new flourish on top or an additional dash of vanilla, but I am thankful that the menu for the month of November is usually set. All that is left is the doing; peeling hundreds of fresh green apples, rolling out as many pie crusts and choosing the colors of the feathers for the turkey cookies.
Most of all I am thankful for our exceptional staff. I often wonder how they do it? How do they consistently make all those products that are truly beautiful and delicious. How does the cafe and counter staff keep smiles on their faces through the longest working days of the year?
I am grateful that they share their talent and their work ethic here each and every day of the year, but especially through these intense holiday weeks.
Six years ago we started a special gathering of staff members that have been working at BonBonerie for fifteen years or more. This year we inducted three new members to this special group to make a total of 12. People like these are what I am most grateful for. What a thrill it has been to know them, to have watched them develop into the super talented people that create for the thousands of Cincinnati families and beyond. In the midst of the most stressful of holiday work days, I try to remind them of just how many people they delight and how many Thanksgivings and Christmases are made better by the cookies, yule logs, cakes and cookies that they have created.
Lastly I am grateful for our beautiful and appreciative customers. We honor the fact that we have become a holiday tradition for your families. Each and every item from the Bakery and Cafe is hand made. Thank you for appreciating what we do. Happy Holidays.
